Description
Common warts (verrucae vulgaris) are usually a
result of infection caused by the human papillomavirus
(HPV). There are several HPV types associated with common
warts, but type 2 is the most likely cause of common warts
located on the hands. The incidence of viral warts is
difficult to assess, but it is widely believed that in they
are uncommon in infancy, increasingly common in childhood,
peak in the teenage years, and then sharply decline in
prevalence. Most
common warts resolve spontaneously within a few months to a
few years due to natural immunity in people with normal
immune systems. Individuals with impaired immunity often
have more frequent and difficult to treat HPV infections.
