Description
Pelvic organ prolapse (relaxation) is a condition
where the supportive structures weaken and the uterus, bladder, or rectum
protrudes into the vagina. Some people may experience pelvic pressure and
involuntary loss of urine or bowel function or discomfort. The causes are
unknown, but felt to have a multi-factorial basis. Risk factors include
congenital abnormalities, aging, childbirth, chronic straining/coughing, and
neurological injury. However, recent studies have suggested that various
components of connective tissue may also play a role in this condition, pointing
to a possible relationship between the development of stretch marks and pelvic
organ prolapse. Consequently, we are conducting a pilot survey study to
determine whether the prevalence of stretch marks in subjects with pelvic
relaxation is higher than in a control population of women subjects with skin
cancer who are expected to have similar demographic characteristics.
